The Operational Mentor and Liaison Teams
The Operational Mentor and Liaison Teams (OMLT)
These teams are integrated in the operational units of the Afghan national army which they support and advise in all their missions. Since August 2006, French teams have been attached to the 201st corps, inserted into the corps headquarters, into its first brigade and the kandaks (battalions) which make it up.
The OLMT’s mission consists in:
- advising the Afghan military in order to enhance training and drill;
- advising the Afghan military on the planning and conduct of operations on the ground and implementing to their advantage the coalition’s air and ground supports when the conditions require it;
- favouring links between ANA and ISAF in order to conduct coordinated actions.
The French troops of the 27th mountain infantry brigade are presently arming two OMLTs which are inserted into infantry kandaks. Members of the 6th light armoured brigade and the 2nd logistics brigade arrived in Afghanistan on the 28th December 2007 and have been arming two new OMLTs since mid-January 2008, one for an engineers and artillery kandak and one for a logistical kandak.

The soldiers, members of the Darwin-based 8/12 Medium Regiment, have spent the past six months in the United Kingdom preparing for their deployment with Task Force Helmand as part of a bilateral program.
The deployment of the 8/12 Medium Regiment personnel will be followed by a similar embedding of gunners from Townsville’s 4th Field Regiment late in 2008.
The Australian gunners will employ the 105mm L118 Light Gun, a similar weapon to the ADF’s L119 Hamel Gun, from Forward Operating Bases throughout Helmand Province.
